When the weather's nice, I love hosting outdoor dinner parties. Sometimes I get uninvited guests, though: pesky mosquitos that seem to hang around regardless of how many citronella candles I light, which usually ends up driving everyone inside. How annoying! That's why I was thrilled to hear about Tiki mosquito lights. Decor that doubles as bug-repellant? Say no more.

Simply put, Tiki mosquito lights are outdoor bistro-style lights that also double as a form of mosquito repellant. From a distance, they look just like outdoor string lights. But if you get closer, you might notice a few unobtrusive mosquito-repellent pods hanging near the bulbs.

Each strand features three refillable pods. They come pre-filled with an odorless, silent mosquito repellant that starts working soon after you’ve turned the lights on and keeps working throughout the season. Meaning, no more sticky bug spray at outdoor dinner parties, and no need to break out a bounty of citronella candles (unless you want to, of course).

The main attraction here is clear. These lights actually repel bugs. When the lights are plugged in and the pods are turned on, it only takes about 15 minutes for the pods to work. If you want to keep using the lights once the mosquitos have called it quits for the season, you can also turn the lights on without turning the mosquito-repellant pods on for year-round enjoyment.

Each 36-foot strand provides up to 330 square feet of commercial-grade protection. If that's not enough, connect as many as eight strands, end-to-end, to maximize your coverage area. According to the Tiki website, hang the lights 10 feet off the ground for the most bang for your buck.

Another big plus? The lights aren't just utilitarian. Even up close, they look like standard bistro lights. And because they produce no odor or sound, string them up directly above an outdoor patio table for added ambiance.

Reviews for the product are overwhelmingly positive, with an average rating of 4.8 stars on Tiki's website. Shoppers who live in warm, humid climates and struggle to keep mosquitos away from food are especially impressed.

"These absolutely blew me away. After setting them up, I couldn't wait for nightfall," says five-star reviewer, Lika. "Living in South Texas, bugs are a real issue. But these seem to do the trick and keep them away so I can still sit outside and enjoy the evening."

Another five-star reviewer, Raven, agrees, "They look really nice and actually work. We noticed a huge difference in the number of bugs from the night before to the next. The lights match our aesthetic and have definitely improved the atmosphere in our backyard. I love that we have the option to choose whether we want the lanterns on or not. When the weather cools off, there's no need to have the repellants working since there won't be many, if any, bugs flying around. We love everything about these lights, and we’re trying to get more."

Ready to turn your backyard oasis into a totally bug-free zone? Each strand of BiteFighter LED String Lights costs $159 on the Tiki website, Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair and Target. Considering they offer commercial-grade protection minus the expensive yard treatments, they’re a total steal. Trust us, the outdoor ambiance feels unreal thanks to these handy lights.
