I'm a master gardener
AFTER what feels like years of chilly, wet weather, it seems the sun is finally starting to emerge and summer is just around the corner.
Which means anyone lucky enough to have an outside space will soon be able to host garden get-togethers.
However, it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to getting the patio into pristine condition and party-ready, and it can feel like a big expense.
Here, horticulturist and editor of Gardening Chores Amber Noyesa and estate agent and founder of LuxurySoCalRealty Joy Aumann share their top tips to give your patio a 'glow up' on a budget..
Transforming a dull patio into a lively summer hangout spot doesn't have to be expensive.
Amber says: "You can brighten up your patio with colourful planters from charity shops (or you can pick up this set of eight large pots for just £14 from Amazon) and repurposed containers.
"I once made a planter out of an old watering can (you can pick up a Cath Kidston can for just £12.50 reduced from £25 currently) , and it was a big hit!"
Joy agrees, adding: "Spruce up your pots to make all the difference.
"You can get cheap decorative pots or, better yet, decoupage your pots and decorate them any way you like!
"Decoupaging is an inexpensive and easy way to decorate almost any surface, and you'll find so many great ideas online."
Another affordable way to create an inviting atmosphere is lighting.
Amber says: "Adding outdoor lighting on a budget is easy with string lights or solar lanterns, creating a warm, inviting vibe."
Joy adds: "String lights are super nifty for setting the mood in any outdoor space.
"You can easily find inexpensive options online or in local stores, and they're a breeze to install.
"Just drape them around your patio, and voilà - you've got yourself an enchanting atmosphere.
"Solar lights also create a warm and cosy atmosphere, and they're not only budget-friendly but also eco-friendly.
"They harness the power of the sun to light up your patio as the evening rolls in."
You can pick up fairy lights almost anywhere - this battery-powered pack from Festive Lights is £9.99.
Even the most inexperienced gardener can add a pop of colour with plants, and there are plenty with bright flowers that don't require much upkeep.
Amber says: "Planting low-maintenance flowers like petunias or marigolds adds life to your outdoor space.
"They're budget-friendly and easy to grow, even for gardening novices."
It's also important to pay attention to detail, and it's often the finishing touches that really have a huge impact.
Amber says: "Wall tapestries can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while ornaments can make your garden feel enchanted.
"DIY projects like repurposing old furniture to save money and add a personal touch to your outdoor oasis.
"I used an old wooden ladder as a plant stand, and it was a showstopper!"
If your garden furniture or fences are looking tired, you don't necessarily have to replace them, which can be expensive.
Instead, a fresh lick of paint can work wonders.
Joy says: "You can't go wrong with chalk style paint.
"It's perfect for revamping your patio furniture and giving it a fresh look.
"I use it all the time when staging my clients' outdoor spaces, and trust me, a fresh coat of paint can work wonders."
You can pick up a 750ml tin of Rust-Oleum chalky finish furniture paint on Amazon for £10.
It's also important to make guests feel comfortable, and soft furnishings are the perfect way to do so.
Joy says: "Cushions and throw pillows are another inexpensive way to add personality to your patio furniture.
"Look for budget-friendly outdoor cushions in fun colours and patterns to make your space cosy and inviting."
Joy says: "Adding a rug is also never a bad idea. It's an easy way to add a pop of colour and pattern to your patio."
For example, Dunelm are selling outdoor water resistant cushions in six different colours for £12.
You can also buy an outdoor rug like this one from Robert Dyas, which is currently £14.99.
Finally, another way to add a bit of life into the patio area is simply rearranging the layout - and it's free.
Joy says: "Sometimes all it takes is a little rearranging to give your patio a fresh feel.
"Play around with the furniture layout, and don't be afraid to mix things up.
"You'd be surprised at how much of a difference a new arrangement can make."
