The unqiue history of Spike Island and Cork Harbour and the historic 'final handover' from the British Empire on July 11th, 1938 will be marked next month with a display that will light up the skies.

July 8th will see boats bring thousands of people across to 'Ireland's Alcatraz' from Cobh - and many thousands more pick viewing spots around the harbour - to witness a spectacular fireworks show.

It will be the 85th anniversary of the historic handover of Spike Island - one of the last 'Treaty Ports' - from the British on July 11th 1938. Completed just before the start of World War II, the handover is said to have made Ireland's neutrality possible during that terrible conflict.

The Independence Day celebrations will include a huge family fun day on the island itself, starting at 5pm, with food, music, entertainment and more, climaxing with the fireworks as the sun goes down.

Spike Island's management says: "Visitors will embark on a ferry journey across Cork Harbour, one of the world's largest natural harbours, and enjoy a guided tour on arrival offering a fascinating insight into the island's remarkable history before exploring the fort, museums and exhibitions as well as the island's stunning walking trail with breathtaking views as the sun sets."

"As the night unfolds, the highlight of the event will be a spectacular fireworks display over Cork Harbour. A total of 1300 fireworks will illuminate the sky, symbolising the inmates who tragically lost their lives during Spike Island's history as a prison in what promises to be a special tribute and a poignant reminder of the island's past."

Big crowds are expected and to facilitate the smooth flow of the event, boats will begin departing from 5.15pm. Return boats will commence at 10.30pm, departing every 10 minutes. Visitors are advised to check their ticket times for the return boat, with the last departure scheduled for approximately 11.45pm.

If you wand to book tickets - you can do so via the Visit Spike Island website. But don't worry if you can't make it out to the island itself, there'll be loads to see from Cobh and some party in the harbour that night.
