We've had a very bright and clear start to the day over most of Cork and Munster - but all of that is about to change pretty dramatically as we move toward lunchtime.
A very heavy band of rain is set to push up from the southwest over the coming hours, bringing thundery downpours to many parts of the south and signalling the start of a very unsettled run of weather.
Daytime temperatures will be in the mid-teens for most of the rest of the week, but will fall sharply to around 11-12 C by Sunday. And while we could see plenty of bright spells in between the showers, we will have to wait a while longer for summer-style weather as it remains relatively cold, wet and unsettled into next week.
The full forecast from Met Eireann this morning for Munster looks like:
TODAY - Tuesday 9th May
Sunny spells and showers today, Tuesday, some heavy and possibly thundery. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees. Light southwest breezes will increase to a moderate, occasionally fresh, westerly wind this afternoon.
TONIGHT
Showers will continue tonight, merging to longer spells of rain at times in the northwest of the province. The showers will be more scattered elsewhere with longer drier and clearer intervals occurring. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds, fresh near the coast.
TOMORROW - Wednesday 10th May
Often cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain, but drier with sunnier intervals in southern coastal parts. Sunny spells will increase towards evening with the showers becoming more generally scattered then. Highs of 11 to 14 degrees in a moderate, occasionally fresh westerly wind.
National Outlook
OVERVIEW: Unsettled with rain or showers at first, but trending drier and more settled towards the end of the week.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Outbreaks of heavy, and possibly thundery, rain will develop in the northwest on Wednesday evening, sweeping southeastwards over the country overnight, followed by showers. Light to moderate westerly winds, fresh to strong along Atlantic coasts, will veer northwest with the passage of the rain. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees, coldest in Ulster.
THURSDAY: Rather dull and wet to begin across the southern half of the country on Thursday, drier and sunnier further north, with scattered showers. The rain will clear the south though the morning leaving a mix of sunshine and showers for the afternoon. Highs of 14 to 17 degrees in mostly light to moderate northerly winds, but winds will continue fresh to strong near southwestern coasts for much of the day. Showers becoming isolated with long clear spells developing on Thursday night. Lows of 6 to 9 degrees in light northerly breezes.
FRIDAY: Largely dry with variable cloud and sunny spells. A little patchy drizzle may brush the northwest coast towards evening. Top temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes.
SATURDAY: Another largely dry day expected with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. The sunshine will turn hazier from the west as the day goes on, with some patchy rain edging into northwestern coasts in the evening. Top temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees in light to moderate southwest breezes.
REST OF THE WEEKEND: Outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards on Saturday night will give way to a noticeably cooler day on Sunday with a mix of sunshine and showers.
