Black Bottom Pools Are The Gothiest Way To Float Your Summer Away
This summer, you might want to get ready for something you’ve never seen before: a black bottom pool!
It seems that everything is getting a reboot these days. We have to admit, the aquamarine pool bottom seems to be so… last year, especially considering the red bottom pool trend. It just seems so predictable to make the bottom of your pool blue or white. It's also harder to keep clean, and shows the dirt so much more!
However, there are concerns about black bottom pools. Are they safe? Do they really save you money?
Let's – ahem – dive in!
One of the biggest differences between a black bottom pool and a regular pool is that the water in a pool with a black bottom has a good chance of being warmer… naturally. Because the dark bottom of the pool will naturally absorb heat from the sun, the water will tend to be more comfortable.
Because of this, you could be looking at a lower electricity bill to warm your pool. As all pool owners know, they can get expensive. Hence, one of the benefits of a dark bottom pool is that it can potentially save you money.
As most of us know, we have to be careful around any kind of swimming pool or body of water. Especially when there are children and dogs involved, we need to use the utmost care.
The question naturally arises around the black swimming pool: is it dangerous?
The dark bottom of a swimming pool can indeed distort depth perception. Because of this, you’ll want to use the utmost care when jumping or diving into your pool. While you’re not taking away visibility entirely, there are definitely safety concerns to be aware of.
Believe it or not, some localities in the USA have banned black bottomed pools because of the distortion in depth perception.
Add to that the fact that people have reported a harder time seeing children or pets if they fall into the pool, and also the fear that an alligator (or sea monster) may have made it into the pool, and scaredy-cats everywhere are making a fuss.
Personally, it seems to be that black swimming pools are more for adults, and less for kids. You’ll always want to have a safety meeting to discuss pool protocol with everyone you have over for a pool party.
The snow and sunset make this pool look like it belongs in this environment. The white of the snow also dramatically contrasts with the black of the pool creating a very aesthetically pleasing look.
2. To infinity and beyond…
This black pool drops off the edge into a forest… or at least it looks that way. And it just wouldn't be as cool if it was aquamarine blue, I’m sure we can all agree.
The palm trees here almost juxtapose the blackness of the pool, and it's also pretty neat you can see the reflection of the trees in the ‘black’ water. The clean lines of this design are perfect for this trendy kind of pool. It looks like some really cool people live here.
4. This house wins
Not only is the pool super neat, but the black accents on the home are striking as well. Loving the nice clean lines and the simple design of the concrete around the pool too.
5. Sunset on a black pool
The plants and stonework in this black pool are beautiful. You can really tell how much goes into the design of these ideas. Because of the lighting, we love how this pool really does look like it has no bottom at all.
The contrasts in design here makes this pool super impactful. Guessing many cool neighbourhood parties happen at this poolside.
7. Spaceship?
Something about this warm, wooden design contrasted with the large square roof overtop the pool makes it all look otherworldly. And look, there are even UFOs floating in the black pool.
8. Black pool country
Quaint, country design, juxtaposed with a gothic black pool. It's so cool when design trends cross over and work this well.
9. Scary surfer fish comes from the depths of a black pool
Look what this cool-looking dude pulled up from the bottomless depths of this pool! Just kidding, looks like he's just featuring his art work in front of a pool. That's cool.
10. Gratuitous bikini in a black pool
This pool makes her look pretty good! Would have been cool if her nails were black though… so much more goth.
So some of the pools featured are dark bottom pools, not necessarily black. But in this case, it's not even the pool that makes everything look otherworldly. This house looks like a cartoon house! Does anyone else see how crooked it is?? Maybe that's just a camera lens thing.
12. Kids in dark pool
This picture illustrates how the water interacts with the materials that cover the bottom of the pool to create the desired effect. So the paint at the bottom isn't (in some cases) even black. It's that the water makes it wet, which makes it that much darker.
You can see for miles from this black bottom pool, even though the entire bottom isn't black. Misnomer? Not really. It's a very dark blue rimmed with black and that's bad*ss enough for us.
14. Fancy black pool
Look how this one comes right up out of the ground! I think they call this a "raised pool", which is super neat because of the way that they have the almost cubist design with that upper level. Plus, look how it goes infinity onto a river instead of the ocean. Never seen that before!
15. Blackest of black pools
This is the one to end all the other black pools. And it even has a rock waterfall running into it. Loving how the surroundings are all totally white to contrast as well. Goth, but also sophisticated.
